Where Is the Mazda Gas Button?

Looking for the Mazda gas tank button and finding no answers? That’s because most of the Mazda lineup allows you to simply press on the edge of the gas lid to pop it open and access the cap, which is a simple screw-off. As soon as you unlock the doors of your Mazda car or SUV, you have access to most models’ gas tanks. However, select models (such as the Mazda CX-5) do have a lever on the bottom left of their dashboard.

At Ocean Mazda West Kendall, we can show you how to open your model if you have any questions. Before you visit, let’s dive into a model-to-model comparison.

While most Mazda gas tank button systems work the same, there are a handful of differences across the lineup. Here are some more specific examples:

  • Mazda3: With the vehicle unlocked, you may press the fuel door (on the back-left side) to open the fuel lid.
  • Mazda MX-5 Miata: The Mazda Miata gas tank opener button is activated by simply pressing on the edge of the fuel lid (on the back left side of your vehicle) when the Mazda MX-5 Miata is unlocked. In emergency situations, a cord in the back-right side when you open your trunk can be leveraged to open the fuel door manually.
  • Mazda CX-5: The gas tank button on the Mazda CX-5 sits on the bottom left of the dashboard, to the left side of the driver’s legroom. It opens a door on the rear left of the SUV.
  • Mazda CX-30: For this SUV’s gas tank button, Mazda CX-30 drivers can press the edge of the fuel lid (on the back left of the model) while the doors are unlocked.
  • Mazda CX-50: The Mazda CX-50 gas tank button is accessed by unlocking the entire vehicle and pressing the gas lid.
  • Mazda CX-70: Similar to other models, the Mazda CX-70 just requires you to unlock the Mazda SUV. Then, you can press the fuel lid on the driver’s side to open it.
  • Mazda CX-90: Just like the Mazda CX-30, the Mazda CX-90 fuel lid opens by pressing the edge of the small door on your driver’s side as long as your doors are unlocked.

Did the Mazda Fuel Door Release Change Across the Years?

Now, these instructions are designed for the 2025 and 2026 model years. Is it the same for older years? In most cases, yes! For instance, a 2022 Mazda CX-30 uses the same mechanism: unlocking the doors, then pressing on the gas tank lid. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 still utilizes the unique fuel lid button, too.

At Ocean Mazda West Kendall, we know every year of the Mazda lineup. With our team, you can troubleshoot gas-lid unlocking issues, schedule service with licensed Mazda technicians, and check out Mazda cars and SUVs in our showroom or used lot.

How do I open the fuel door on a Mazda?

To open the fuel door on most Mazda vehicles:

  1. Unlock your vehicle (not just the driver’s side door).
  2. Locate your fuel lid (which is typically on the back-left side of the vehicle).
  3. Press it in slightly and let it bounce out.

Some specific models, such as the Mazda MX-30, have a traditional fuel lid lever on the dashboard near the driver’s left foot.

Why won’t my Mazda fuel door open?

There are a few things you can do if your Mazda fuel door refuses to open:

  • Check to ensure all doors are fully unlocked.
  • Make sure the ignition is turned off.
  • Mazda Miata owners can open the trunk and pull the cord at the top, back-left corner.
  • You may have to take it to our dealership (and parts center) if there is an internal issue.
